Conegliano

Conegliano

North of Treviso, around the nice town of CONEGLIANO, the landscape is no longer boring. The surrounding hills are covered with vineyards, and the production of wine (especially Prosecco) is crucial for the region's economy. W 1876 r. the first vine grower school was founded in Conegliano, and today tourists can explore two wine routes here; The Strada del Vino Rosso goes on 68 km southeast of ODERZO, but the way west is more interesting, 42-kilometer long Strada del Vino Bianco leading to VALDOBBIADENE. Details on these routes can be obtained from the extremely helpful AAST office, right in front of the train station on viale Carducci 32. Getting to Conegliano is straightforward, as the train from Venice to Udine stops here regularly.

City

Stay miasto Conegliano, stuck to the slopes of Colle di Giano, is located in front of the station. The most ornate element of via XX Settembre - originally the main street - is the unusual facade of the Duomo: 14th-century portico, covered in the 16th century. frescoes, it blends in with the neighboring buildings, as it were. The interior of the church has been rebuilt many times, but fragments of 15th-century frescoes have been preserved; the greatest decoration of the church is the perfect altar painting Madonna and Child surrounded by saints and angels, painted in 1493 r. by Giambattista Cima, the most famous son of Conegliano.

Cima's birthplace, judgment no 24 at via G. B. Up (at the back of the Duomo), was transformed into Casa Museo di G.. B. Up (sb. i nd. 16.00-18.00; Free entrance), where you can see mainly reproductions of his paintings and archaeological finds from the period of the restoration of the house.

civic Museum (summer Tue-Sun. 9.00-12.00 15.30-19.00; in winter Tue-Sun. 9.00-12.00 i 14.00-17.30; 1500 L) it is located in the main tower of the reconstructed castello at the top of the hill. Among the paintings, mostly in workshops, there are no masterpieces, and medal exhibitions, map, war memorabilia, weapons, etc.. are not particularly interesting. However, this is compensated by other attractions of the museum: on the first floor there is an excellent exhibition entitled Grapes in Art - the motif of grapes in all forms of art is presented wonderfully and with expertise, and from the roof there is a beautiful view.

Via Settembre XX has all possible cafes, bars and grocery stores. If you are planning an overnight stay, at number 129 there is a good Canon d'Oro hotel (• 0438/ 22173), with doubles after 46000 L and more, and an excellent restaurant; the prosecco served here is considered the best in the city. Rooms in the Studio, via Istria 51 (• 0438/ 22320), are about 20000 L cheaper, so you can spend the night here, and spend the saved money on a feast at Canon d'Oro.
