Vittorio Veneto

Vittorio Veneto

The name VITTORIO VENETO first appeared on the map in 1866 r., when to celebrate the unification of Italy and to pay tribute to the first king of the new state (Victor Emmanuel II) neighboring towns of Ceneda and Serravalle (not overly sympathetic before) were combined and took a common name. A town hall was built in the middle of the avenue connecting the old towns, and opposite - a train station: so the travelers get off the train into a kind of no man's land.

Dinner

To CENEDA, Vittorio Veneto shopping center, it is worth coming mainly for the Museo della Battaglia, which is located right next to the uninteresting cathedral (V-IX wt.-nd. 10.00-12.00 i 16.00-18.30; X-IV wt.-nd. 10.00-12.00 i 14.00-17.00; 2000 L for a combined ticket to the Museo della Battaglia, Museo of Serravalle and the Church of San Lorenzo) - after leaving the station, go right until you reach the sign for the center. Battle of Vittorio in October 1918 r. it was the last skirmish of the First World War for the Italian army (therefore, in most Italian cities there is via Vittorio Veneto) and the museum is dedicated to this battle that culminates in four years of fighting.

Besides, the only building in Ceneda, which deserves attention, is the Church of Santa Maria del Meschio, where you can find the excellent Annunciation by Andrea Previtali, a student of Giovanni Bellini. Walk to the church a bit to the left of the road connecting Ceneda-Serravalle in front of the cathedral square.

Serravalle

Squeezed into the narrowing of the ravine between Col Visentin and Cansiglio SERRAVALLE is something completely different. After passing through the southern gate, you will find yourself in the city, which has remained almost intact since the 16th century. Most of the buildings in via Martiri della Liberta, via Roma and via Mazzini, and around the Piazza Marcantonio Flaminio, which resembles a scene, comes from the 15th and 16th centuries., and the most beautiful is the Loggia Serravallese encrusted with shields. It now houses the Museo del Cenedese (V-IX code. 10.00-12.00 i 16.30-18.30; X-IV codes. 10.00-12.00 i 15.00-17.00), a mixture of sculpture fragments, archaeological finds, frescoes taken off the walls and paintings by less known artists.

It is more useful to spend time in the Church of San Lorenzo dci Battuti (Wed-Mon. 15.30-16.30; sightseeing should be arranged in the Museo del Cenedese), which is just outside the south gate; it is decorated with frescoes made around 1450 r. This series of frescoes was discovered in 1953 r. and restored after damage, which the services of Napoleon had done, using the church as a kitchen; the cycle is one of the best preserved in all of Veneto.
