Verona

With its wealth of Roman monuments and streets lined with pink medieval houses, VERONA has more to offer than any other city in Veneto, except for Venice itself. But, unlike the capital of St.. Brand, the tourism industry does not rule Verona, however it is important for the local economy. Verona is Veneto's largest land-based city, and it owes its economic success primarily to its location at the intersection of important roads from Germany and Austria to central Italy, and from the west to Venice and Trieste.

The original Roman settlement was also established here because of its location at the intersection of trade routes from north to south and from west to east. After a period of decline due to the collapse of the Roman Empire, Verona developed under the Ostrogoths, which were in turn replaced by the Franks - the son of Charlemagne, Pepin, he governed his kingdom from here. W XII c. Verona became a municipal commune, and in the following century it reached the pinnacle of its independence with the rise of the Scaliger family. These ruthless rulers were also energetic patrons of the arts and many of the city's most beautiful buildings date back to their century..

After the fall of this dynasty, there was a period of chaos, and finally Gian Galeazzo Visconti from Milan gained control of the city. W 1405 r. Verona was absorbed by the Venetian empire and Venice ruled here until Napoleon came. The history of both cities was similar from that moment on: covered a long period of Austrian rule, ended with the unification of Italy in 1866 r.
